Please join us for a Brown Bag lunch discussion with Mrs. Abigail Chibebe, wife of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions' Secretary General, Wellington Chibebe. Mrs. Chibebe will speak on the role that family plays in supporting Zimbabwe's trade union leaders and activists. Trade unionists are targeted regularly by government forces for harassment, violence, and arbitrary detention. But behind the public faces of union activists stand the thousands of wives, husbands, children, family members and friends who are also affected by the ongoing brutality. Mrs. Chibebe will tell of her own experiences of supporting the struggle for human rights in Zimbabwe.
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) is the central trade union federation in Zimbabwe. ZCTU was formed on February 28, 1981 through the merger of six trade unions African Trade Union Congress (ATUC), the National African Trade Union Congress (NATUC), the Trade Union Congress of Zimbabwe (TUCZ), the United Trade Unions of Zimbabwe (UTUZ), the Zimbabwe Federation of Labour (ZFL) and the Zimbabwe Trade Union Congress (ZTUC).In the 1990s ZCTU grew increasingly opposed to the Zimbabwe government’s policies and became the main force behind the formation of a new political party called the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
