A discussion with Soweto human rights activist Virginia Magwaza Setshedi

Details: Virginia Magwaza-Setshedi comes from Soweto. Her activism started while she was a student at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1994-2001; as a community and human rights activist. She became one of the founder members of the Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee, established in 2000 to take up the struggle against privatization of electricity and inefficient electricity provision and for the poor in Soweto. Virginia is also amongst the activists who established the Anti-Privatization Forum in Johannesburg and in Cape Town, a forum that brings together community organizations who are affected by privatization in a broader sense. Virginia in 2002-2003 worked with the Alternative Information and Development Centre in Cape Town providing community organizations with information around issues of Trade, Debt, Globalization and Privatization. In 2004-2007 she worked with the Freedom of Expression Institute as the Head of the Media and ICT’s Programme. She is presently employed with the Nowergian People’s Aid as the Programme Manager since 2008.
